A few months ago I met Etienne Déclais, a young 19-year-old graduate of Craponne's STI2D program who was studying in Belgium. Like many young people, he was affected by the health crisis and had to stop his schooling to return to Craponne during confinement. When we first spoke, I saw his motivation and his desire to get involved in the maintenance of peace. Etienne is a young person full of ambition and carries within him the essential values transmitted by his parents.
Through his actions and words, his commitment to the Young Peacemakers Program, he proved that it is necessary to continue the work of peacekeeping.
He has become the standard bearer of the National Federation of Former Overseas Missions, FNAME - OPEX.

Commitment is an important value that we try to pass on in the education of our children. We are very happy that Etienne has the desire to give himself for Peace and for his country. We wish him to discover himself in this commitment and to find joy in the service and defense of the weakest.

My name is Etienne Déclais, I am 19 years old, I am the second of a family of 5 children. I got my technological baccalaureate STI2D in 2019 and I started studying comic strip in Belgium.
Scout since my early years, I have always loved this environment of community life, adventure and surpassing oneself. Unfortunately, I had to leave the movement to be able to continue my studies in Belgium.
Following the confinement of March 2020, I returned to Craponne. I realized that these studies no longer suited me, in spite of my passion for drawing. I needed to build a future for myself that would meet my aspirations and dreams.
So I asked myself if I wanted to join the ranks of the French Army. A childhood dream that could finally come true.
Indeed, at 8 years old, my parents took me to see the 1st SPAHIS regiment during the open days. We could get into tanks, talk to soldiers and watch an operation staged. I was under the spell.
A few months ago, after talking with Lieutenant of RC PERRET Alexandra, I engaged myself in the path to become a young volunteer. I registered with CIRFA in Lyon, located at the Quartier Général Frère in the 7th arrondissement. I did two days of medical, physical and psychotechnical tests.
For me, the army is the place where I have the opportunity to be trained, to progress and to work in a team on the field.
By becoming a Young Peacemaker and FNAME OPEX flag bearer, I am getting closer and closer to my goal which is to represent my country at all times and in all places. I am proud of the role entrusted to me. Thanks to my education that my parents gave me, I am able to accomplish myself fully and transmit these values of peace.
I warmly thank all the people who believed in me and who placed their hopes in my projects.
I hope to inspire my generation to get involved and carry out our colors high. I also hope to reassure the older ones, don't worry, many young people are volunteering to protect our principles and our country.
Etudiante en master pour être professeure des écoles, j’ai rencontré les jeunes faiseurs de paix cette année au travers de l’engagement de mes frères. Et quoi de mieux que le défilé du 14 juillet à Paris pour ma première action avec eux ? J’ai été impressionnée par le défilé, qui était, entre autres, dédié à la jeunesse.
Ainsi, j’ai aperçu plusieurs écoles militaires et des jeunes engagés, fiers de leur uniforme. La petite délégation des jeunes faiseurs de paix a été ensuite invitée par les anciens combattants de la FNAME – OPEX, à visiter les Invalides et à assister à la cérémonie du ravivage de la flamme éternelle sous l’Arc de Triomphe. Cette cérémonie m’a particulièrement marquée, parce qu’elle nous rappelle les soldats morts pour nous défendre et défendre la liberté. Nous avons ainsi honoré notre devoir de mémoire en cette journée du 14 juillet.
Après cette journée, riche en symboles et en commémorations, j’espère transmettre dans mes prochaines classes l’importance du respect et de la reconnaissance d’un engagement dans l’armée. Mettre en pratique le programme des jeunes faiseurs de paix me semble alors le meilleur outil pour les élèves, pour agir en tant que citoyen à sa propre mesure.

Je m’appelle Jean Déclais, j’ai 12ans. J’ai la chance de faire partie du programme des jeunes faiseurs de paix qui m’a invité à Paris au défilé du 14 juillet.
Je fus émerveillé des soldats, des avions, des hélicoptères, des chars ... de tout. Ce moment qui restera graver dans ma mémoire. Ensuite, les anciens combattant nous ont invité aux Invalides. Nous avons pu voir le mémorable tombeau de Napoléon ainsi que la cathédrales Saint-Louis, une des plus magnifiques et incroyables églises qui accueille les funérailles des soldats morts en OPEX. Plus tard dans la journée, les anciens combattants nous ont invité à la cérémonie du ravivage de la flamme sous l’Arc de Triomphe, où repose le Soldat inconnu. Cette cérémonie était très belle, et très simple comparé au défilé. J’ai apprécié le silence qui y régné et le respect sur les visages des militaires présents.
J’étais très heureux de pouvoir assisté à cette journée magique.
